One in custody after fatal vehicular accident in Hempstead

Police report the arrest of a Hempstead man for a auto accident that occurred on August 30 around 11pm. According to Detectives, a 31-year-old male victim was operating his Suzuki motorcycle, traveling southbound on Clinton Street, approaching Burr Avenue. The defendant, Darwin Velasquez, 29, attempted to make a left-hand turn, traveling northbound onto Burr Avenue. The two vehicles collided throwing the victim off of his motorcycle, causing fatal injuries. Defendant Velasquez sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The investigation revealed that defendant Velasquez was intoxicated at the time of the accident and he was placed under arrest without incident. Defendant Darwin Velasquez is charged with Manslaughter 2nd Degree, Assault 2nd Degree, Vehicular manslaughter 2nd Degree, Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree, Reckless Driving, and Driving While Intoxicated. He will be arraigned on Monday, August 31, 2020 in Mineola.
