New York State Police arrest Newburgh man for driving while intoxicated with child in vehicle

On June 14, 2025, New York State Police arrested 54-year-old Carlos A. Mejia, of Newburgh, NY, for driving while intoxicated following a traffic stop on Interstate 87 in the Town of Woodbury.

While on routine patrol, a Trooper observed a 2019 gray Nissan Rogue parked on the right shoulder of the roadway near Central Valley. The operator, later identified as Mejia, was standing outside the vehicle. During the initial interview, Mejia stated he had pulled over while returning from a family gathering in Yonkers. An adult passenger, and a 7-year-old female were also in the vehicle.

While speaking with Mejia, the Trooper detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and observed signs of impairment, including bloodshot, watery eyes. Open containers of beer were observed inside the vehicle. Mejia admitted to drinking “a couple of beers” after exhibiting several indicators of intoxication during field sobriety testing.
