Lawyers and insurance companies racking up busy services

It's not really good to be a driver without being careful in NY.

As of February 16, 2026, new laws for points came into effect statewide. The new trigger point is 11 and three major violations are alcohol or drug related incidents, aggravated unlicensed operation, pleading guilty while license is suspended or revoked.

If caught with cell phone or texting is 6 points, construction zone speeding is 8 points and passing a stopped school bus with flashing red light is 8 points.

Now the 5 points are speed contests, leaving the scene of injury accident and failure to exercise due care.

The 4 points are speeding ticket.

Five hour course will reduce up to 4 points and may lower insurance.

The new look back record will remain up to 24 months for insurance companies.

Always remember points are based on violation date.

Accumulating 10 points within 24 months will result in a license suspension. Since the new law came into effect, 713 drivers were suspended statewide according to DMV mostly for phone and speeding. Oh well.
