Flag on half staff to honor a Rockville Centre officer

The town of Rockville Centre in Nassau County is having their flag half staff to honor one of their own. Westbury resident and Rockville Centre Police Department Officer Michael Lerner died after a motorcycle accident in Eastport, Suffolk County.

He has served the Village of Rockville Centre since 2021.

According to Southampton Town police, the crash took place at 3:26 a.m.; Michael E. Lerner, 39, was driving a 2022 Harley Davidson motorcycle and traveling west on Old Country Road, west of Tuttle Avenue in Eastport, when he lost control of his vehicle, according to police.

He drove off the roadway, hitting a heavily wooded area, and was pronounced dead at the scene from the police statement.

The investigation continues.
