Fire breaks out at North Allen street apartment building in Albany

Three residents managed to self-evacuate safely after a fire broke out at their apartment building on North Allen Street Saturday, Albany’s fire chief said.

Firefighters were initially dispatched at approximately 5:01 p.m. Saturday, according to Albany Fire Department Chief Joseph Gregory, who said emergency responders arrived on scene just three minutes later.

At 183 North Allen Street, just off Washington Avenue, Gregory told CBS6 that units found heavy fire in the rear of a residence structure that had extended into the first and second floor apartments, as well as into the attic area. A second alarm was transmitted to call for additional assistance, which the chief said was due to the close proximity to buildings on either side of the residence where the fire began.
