A new movement is going forth in Jackson Heights

The Let's Improve Roosevelt Avenue Coalition which was launched with a five point plan made the first impact on Wednesday at 6pm when one of the brothels was raided by the NYPD. Then shut down after making arrests. This is on Roosevelt Avenue and 90th Street.

Around 300 to 400 people witnessed the raid and arrest according to one of the organizers. Beside prostitution, there are shoplifting and open drug activities that must be stopped.

According to the Governor's Office, after launching programs to help people to lead a normal life with $30 million dollars from taxpayers went to disaster since it didn't prove to be working. One of the main reasons is due to financial difficulties and one woman stated prostitution pays more to cover the debts owed to traffickers, send money to families in the native country and survive in Queens. With rising costs and rent, it's very difficult to find jobs to cover all the burden of debts.

Meanwhile, the residents who are against illegal activities in Jackson Heights are having a planned rally on Sunday, September 29 at 2pm on Roosevelt Avenue and 90th Street. This is called, Roosevelt Avenue in Crisis: Demand Change Now!
