Two individuals charged after larceny investigation in the town of Potsdam

On June 11, 2026, New York State Police charged Tanya M. Sochia, age 42, of Norfolk, with Conspiracy in the 5th Degree. Additionally, John G. Barto, age 51, of Brasher Falls, was charged with Grand Larceny in the 4th Degree and Conspiracy in the 5th Degree.

On June 10, 2026, at approximately 5:39 p.m., Troopers responded to Walmart, located on U.S. Highway 11 in the town of Canton, for a larceny complaint. An investigation determined two individuals entered the store and stole merchandise valued at approximately $1,358.17 by passing all points of purchase without paying.

The individuals were stopped and questioned by store personnel before leaving the location.

Further investigation identified the individuals as Barto and Sochia. They were later located and transported to SP Canton for processing.
