Town of Hempstead proposed fine for releasing balloons

On Monday, The Town of Hempstead proposed a $500 fine for people releasing balloons in the air on purpose.

The aim is to protect the wildlife and environment to prevent pollution.

Several towns in Long Island have passed the legislation including Long Beach.

According to Laura Curran, Nassau County Executive stated, "It's not about a 5-year-old child who accidentally lets go of a balloon and it floats up in the air. It's about having parties, weddings, any celebration where in the past everyone held a balloon and let it go in the air, we're not going to see it anymore."

The vote will take place on October 2.
