The first public hearing set for reparations in NYC

On September 12, 2024, a slew of bills passed in the NYC Council on slavery reparations study. This is to benefit the descendants of slaves in NYC which was passed by 41 to 8.

After the same bill of commission to study was introduced in California which passed until the Governor opted, the same set of legislatures were introduced in the both NYS and NYC chambers.

For NYS, the study commission was approved by the Governor last December 2023.

The bill needs majority votes to approve and then the Mayor will need to sign to make it law for compensation.

A taskforce has been created and the first event for the public hearing will be held in Jamaica. This is on November 12 from 4pm to 8pm at Roy Wilkins Park which is open to the public.
