Suspect now charged with attempted murder in Queens

After public outrage and calls to the Queens DA's Office, new charges have been filed.

According to the Queens DA's Office, here is the announcement.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said: “We have charged Randol Contreras with attempted murder. A young woman is fighting for her life after being stabbed in an unprovoked attack as she exited the subway system. This defendant allegedly asked the victim for money and then stabbed the woman multiple times in the torso, leaving her with a punctured liver and lung, and slashed her face. Millions of New Yorkers rely on our mass transit system, and we will aggressively prosecute those that commit violence on our subways.”

Defendant Randol Contreras was arraigned late yesterday evening and remanded. The defendant is accused of stabbing a woman on July 28 near Jamaica Avenue and the Van Wyck Expressway. The defendant is charged with attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, two counts of attempted robbery in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree. He is due back in court on Friday August 2.
