Retail thefts unreported continue to force retailers closing in NYC

From the NYPD Compstat, as of February 1, 2026, there were 8,588 thefts of all kinds reported compared to last year at 9,253 which is down by 7.2%.

Yay, crime is down.

There were 3,467 grand larcenies including property thefts, petit larceny at 8,172, 884 stolen vehicles and 3,949 retail thefts which are all down compared to last year.

Again, crime is down. Yay.

However, local retailers refuse to call the NYPD or the government for help since it's not working, falling on deaf ears. This forced many stores to close for good but mainly large retailers are closing anyway.

Some of the areas reported by store owners have their merchandise locked up only to get broken into now have chain link doors.

The biggest loss is jobs by people working in the stores now have to stay alert if they are going to have to keep looking for another one to pay bills.

As of February 1,118 stores have closed for good in NYC according to NYS Division of Licensing which oversees incorporations registered to operate a business in the state.
