Queens Village woman indicted for assault involving knife attack on cops

The grand jury at Queens County in Kew Gardens Criminal Court indicted Lydia Spicer, 49 of Queens Village on charges of attempted aggravated assault on a police officer, attempted assault, menacing a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly charging at two NYPD Officers with a knife in the vicinity of 212 Street and Jamaica Avenue on Friday, May 24, 2019. Spicer is charged in a seven-count indictment with two counts of first-degree aggravated assault upon a police officer, first-degree attempted assault, two counts of menacing a police or peace officer and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The defendant was arraigned in the hospital today via video conferencing before Acting Queens Supreme Court Justice Ronald Hollie.

Acting District Attorney Ryan said, according to the charges, shortly before 10:30 p.m. on May 24, 2019, two NYPD Officers were conducting a routine patrol in their marked cruiser when they spotted the defendant acting erratically outside of a car wash near the intersection of 212th Street and Jamaica Avenue. The officers pulled over and exited their vehicle and approached Spicer, who allegedly stated in sum and substance to the officers ?I?ll (expletive) kill you.? The defendant is then alleged to have thrown a glass bottle at both officers before reaching into her purse and pulling out a knife. Surveillance cameras as well as the Officers' NYPD-issued body worn cameras allegedly captured Spicer approaching the officers with the knife, who in response, drew their weapons and repeatedly instructed the defendant to drop the knife. The defendant refused and continued to point the weapon at the officers. Furthermore, according the charges, the defendant focused her attention on the female officer and approached the female officer with the knife. The female officer fired a single round from her gun at the defendant, striking her once in the abdomen. The defendant then turned towards the second police officer just before fleeing the scene. The defendant was later apprehended and tasered by responding officers across from the car wash. The defendant?s knife was allegedly recovered.

Justice Hollie remanded the defendant and her return date is July 8, 2019. If convicted, Spicer faces up to 40 years in prison. (From Queens DA's Office)
