Police identify teen who died in congress street shooting in upstate NY

Schenectady Police have identified the 15-year-old homicide victim from Saturday night’s shooting on Congress Street as Dubar T. Knowles, of Schenectady.

The 13-year-old female victim is also from Schenectady and is currently recovering from surgery at a local hospital for a gunshot wound. She is in stable condition.

Schenectady school community, Supt. Dr. Carlos M. Cotto Jr. spoke of Knowles' death and the injuries sustained by the younger victim, an 8th-grade student at Oneida Middle School.

He announced that "Social workers and counselors will be on hand and available at school on Tuesday for anyone who needs support and to talk." He added links to community resources and asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact police.

A teenager has died, and another was taken to the hospital, after a reported shooting in Schenectady Saturday night.

According to a release, Schenectady Police officers responded to the 1100 block of Congress Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues, at approximately 11:20 p.m. for multiple reports of gunfire. On scene, officers reportedly found a large crowd running from the area, before noticing a 15-year-old boy in the backyard of 1122 Congress Street, suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso.

While investigating, authorities said they were made aware of an additional victim from the incident several blocks away on Chrisler Avenue. There, officers said they found a 13-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound to her head/neck area.

A police spokesperson said both victims were assisted by the Schenectady Fire Department and brought to the hospital. The 15-year-old victim reportedly died at the hospital from his injuries, while the 13-year-old is in stable condition and receiving treatment.

Through the preliminary investigation, authorities said it appears that the victims and multiple other minors were attending a party at 1122 Congress Street, where the 15-year-old was found. Police said they believe the suspect or suspects began shooting while there.

Schenectady Police detectives and investigators from New York State Police are investigating.

As of Sunday morning, police said no one was in custody.
