Only questions are raised but bail reform continues in NYC

The NYC Mayor was at the press meet yesterday during a fatal police involved shooting in Jamaica. The statement issued at 5:35pm, Tuesday afternoon, police responded to a robbery in progress inside an eatery on the corner of Hillside Avenue and 164 Street, the suspect entered to commit a robbery, a single gunshot was fired. Then at 6:24pm, while police were searching for the matching description of the suspect, male, black, a witness flagged down two officers on patrol who saw him. At 6:30pm, the same evening, the same officers approached the suspect on the corner of Jamaica Avenue and 161st Street. The officers told the suspect to stop running and refused to comply while displaying a weapon. One of the officers returned fire and the suspect died. The officer was hit in the leg and is expected to make a full recovery after being released from the hospital today. The other officer was not injured. A female, 26 year old bystander was shot in the leg and is in stable condition.

The suspect has 17 prior arrests and was on lifetime parole convicted of manslaughter in 1994 and convicted of criminal possession burglary in 2008. He was released in 2021 and arrested 7 times since then and released each time. Then 3 more arrests for armed robberies in Queens from October 31, 2024 to November 15, 2024.

Mayor Eric Adams and police officers continue to slam the criminal justice system for failing New Yorkers but bail reform won't be reversed anytime soon.

Today a new NYPD Comissioner has been appointed. Jessica Tisch, the former DSNY commissioner will start the new role.
