One unreal tales scamming a senior on Long Island

Bank tellers went through new training to specifically spot seniors withdrawing large amounts and must report them to the authorities.

Still, crooks find a way to scam seniors.

This is the latest incident.

The SCPD reported a resident of Melville, 89, called a number seen online for tech support on retrieving a password. The incident was reported on August 7 around 1:30pm. The claimed tech support convinced the victim that his bank accounts had been compromised and needed to remove money from the bank. The victim went to the bank and was told not to trust the worker while withdrawing the money. The victim told the worker when asked why withdrawing such an amount and stated it was for a car.

The victim then called the suspect to pick up the cash from his residence and the money was exchanged. The victim also took a picture of the suspect without knowing. After not hearing from the suspect, the victim called the police.

More than 3,000 seniors were scammed on Long Island for the year 2023 with Nassau facing a loss of $73 million and Suffolk with $53 million.

Anyone who believes they are a victim of this scam should contact Financial Crimes at 631-852-6821 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
