No to government yes to private landlords

The bill, Fair Chance for Housing Act has the support of 30 NYC Councilmembers which is set to go before the Committee on Civil Rights for the first public hearing on December 8.

The bill prohibits landlords who owns private buildings and homes from performing criminal background checks on potential tenants even those convicted of murder, rape and other heinous crimes. The bill is expected to pass as the NYC Mayor is expected to sign it to make it law.

However this bill does not apply to NYCHA and other public housing under government control since it's a state and federal matter.

The Mayor's Office stated, "No one should be denied housing because they were once engaged with the criminal justice system, plain and simple."
