Multiple charges filed after stabbing at thruway rest area in Pattersonville

On August 5, 2026, New York State Police assigned to Troop T and Troop G Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested Sincere T. Germain, 21, and Jermaine B. Alterma, Jr., 19, both of Schenectady, for the following:

Gang assault, 1st degree (felony)

In addition, several minors were charged with the following:

A 17-year-old Schenectady male charged with felony gang assault, 1st degree

A 16-year-old Schenectady male charged with felony gang assault, 1st degree; felony assault, 2nd degree; and misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon, 4th degree

A 15-year-old Schenectady male charged with felony gang assault, 1st degree

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 17-year-old female, operating a 2017 Subaru sedan, along with the five individuals noted above, traveled to the Pattersonville Rest Area on the New York State Thruway (I-90) in the town of Florida and located two rest area employees who were outside on break. One of the employees and several vehicle occupants were known to each other. The five passengers proceeded to strike the two employees, and the 16-year-old male cut one of the employees with a utility knife. The passengers then left the scene. Based upon a witness description, a BOLO (be on the lookout) was issued, the vehicle was located in the city of Schenectady and a traffic stop was initiated by the Schenectady Police Department. Troopers responded to the scene and located the weapon used in the assault in the vehicle.

The victim who was slashed, a 22-year-old male from Amsterdam, was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam with significant, but non-life-threatening injuries. The second victim was not injured.

All six of the vehicle occupants were transported to SP Princetown. Germain and Alterma Jr. were arraigned in Florida Town Court. The 15-year-old was released to the supervision of his parents. The 16 and 17-year-olds to be arraigned in Youth Part County Court. The vehicle driver was not charged.
