Members of NYC Council from Queens want Kew Gardens as the first location for jail

126-02 82nd Ave in Kew Gardens behind the criminal court has been empty for 15 years. It used to be Queens Detention Complex now used by Dept of Corrections occasionally for training. Community Board 9 has been notified back in April. Members of Queens City Council, Elizabeth Crowley, Karen Koslowitz, Costa Constantinides, Donovan Richards, Barry Grodenchik, Peter Koo, Rory Lancman, Jimmy Van Bramer, Daniel Dromm, Julissa Ferreras-Copeland, and Antonio Reynoso. The commission of closing Rikers Island in 10 years and scouting locations is headed by Jonathan Lippman who advises best to have jails next to courthouses. The mayor's office has no list of locations for jails and prefers smaller places rather than large scattered throughout the five boroughs. Queens Detention can allocate 300 prisoners which is considered too large, implied from the mayor's office.
