Man arrested for arson in Brooklyn

FDNY Fire Marshals have made an arrest in an arson case involving a landlord. Investigators say Rafiqul Islam was angry his second-floor tenants stopped paying rent and refused to move out, so he set fire to an interior staircase at 212 Forbell Street in Brooklyn. Two adults and six children were home at the time of the fire and escaped.

Interviews with the fire victims revealed Mr. Islam had been threatening to cut off their gas and electric, and ultimately threatened to burn the house down if he wasn’t paid his rent.

Video from the day and time of the fire revealed a masked and hooded man enter and leave the home shortly before first 911 call. Marshals spent four weeks conducting an extensive video canvas to verify the suspect’s identity before finally finding image of Islam with his hood and mask down.

Islam has been charged with numerous offenses including eight counts of attempted murder, assault and arson. He will be prosecuted by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.
