MTA is working on a new vote to replace metrocards with smart phone

The MTA board is working on the new vote to replace metrocards with smart phone as the entry. The new technology will cost $570 million dollars using mobile app downloaded to use. The payment setup is either prepaid or automated with credit cards. MTA wants to abolish the metrocards and replace with phone app. If passed, the year 2023 will be the last for metrocards and phone app will be available in 2019. About 500 subway stations and 600 buses will have the smart phone feature by Spring 2019 and the entire NYC by 2020. Update - As of Monday afternoon, the MTA board approved to phase out metrocards and replace with smart phones. Apps such as Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay are the regular features to use the technology. For those who doesn't have smart phones will have to use debit or credit cards with near field communication that's embedded chip technology inserted to it.
