Incarcerated individual facing charges following assault on correction officer at auburn correctional facility

The New York State Police in Auburn, in conjunction with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Office of Special Investigations (DOCCS-OSI), are investigating an assault on a correction officer that occurred at Auburn Correctional Facility on March 2, 2026.

The investigation determined that on March 2, 2026, at approximately 4:38 p.m., incarcerated individual Amar Bell, age 49, of Marcy, NY, assaulted a correction officer while the officer was performing duties within the facility. Bell allegedly struck the officer multiple times and stabbed him three times with a homemade weapon.

The victim, a correction officer, sustained multiple puncture wounds and other injuries and was transported to Auburn Community Hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, Bell was taken into custody by correctional staff after resisting and becoming combative during escort procedures. A homemade shank-style weapon was recovered at the scene and secured as evidence.

The Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office will be consulted regarding additional charges.

The investigation remains ongoing.
