Incarcerated individual charged following assault on correction officer at Auburn correctional facility

On September 18, 2026, New York State Police processed Amar Bell,  age 49, following an investigation into the March assault of a correction officer at Auburn Correctional Facility.

The investigation determined Bell, who was incarcerated at the facility at the time, approached a correction officer during evening meal movement and struck him in the face before stabbing him three times with a homemade weapon. The correction officer sustained one puncture would to his upper left arm and two puncture wounds to his upper left back.

The correction officer was transported to Auburn Community Hospital for treatment.

Following the assault, a homemade, icepick-style weapon was recovered by correctional facility staff. State Police investigators also obtained and reviewed surveillance footage of the incident.

The investigation was conducted by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at SP Auburn in coordination with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Office of Special Investigations.

The case was presented to a Cayuga County grand jury, which subsequently indicted Bell.

Bell was charged with:

Assault 2nd degree (D felony)

Possession of Dangerous Prison Contraband 1st degree (D felony)

Attempted Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer with a Deadly Weapon (E felony)
