Deadline announced for Rikers closing

The last day by law to close Rikers Island is August 31, 2027. This is in time for borough jails to be ready in Lower Manhattan, the South Bronx, Downtown Brooklyn, and Kew Gardens, Queens with 1,400 beds at each location with community and retail spaces.

The only question is whether the NYC Mayor will accept the deadline or not since it's too early to decide. Also, by then the Department of Correction (DOC) will be transferred to the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) by 2027 which will take over the operation. 2019 was the year when the majority of City Council voted to close Rikers to please their real estate donors.

Already the socialist movement and organizations are calling it a victory while communities are working to reform civilians with criminal backgrounds.

Meanwhile, developers with that certain contacts are all smiles eyeing the lot for the next development. One of the main projects is The Renewable Rikers Act is to build new energy and waste facilities.
