Copper theft is on the rise in Glen Oaks

"Take anything you can", that's the message from freelance collectors of scrap metals in Glen Oaks. The demand of copper has thieves soliciting around boiler rooms in Glen Oaks Village Co-op stealing wires to the highest bidders by meeting in secluded locations. According to Kitco.com, the exchange center for copper, the market demand is at all time high and continue to increase. The scrap metal companies that collect the wires and pipes do not ask questions such as where are they obtained from and everyone bringing items get paid by the weight. The NYPD reported most of the copper thefts occur within MTA sections and few arrests were made. Beside Glen Oaks, thieves target apartments by checking locks around the boiler rooms.
