Collection bins in NYS must report the purpose of use

On Monday, January 15, the NYS Attorney General stated all collection bins in NYS must report whether the donated items will be used for profit or charity. People can report if the collections bins are not posted with their purpose. Almost 5,000 collection bins have disclosed their intentions. All collection bins must display the name, address, phone number and other details. This issue came to light after residents complained to the Attorney General's office regarding the company, Thrift Land which placed over 1,000 collection bins in NYC tricking people it was for charity but investigation showed it was for profit by selling clothes and other items disposed by the public into the collection bins. The company settled with fines over $700,000. Each bin must show purpose of either donated items will be used for charitable purpose or used for profit.
