Bellerose resident arrested for hate crime in Bayside

Police are investigating two status vandalized in the yard of American Martyrs Church on Bell Blvd and Union Turnpike in Bayside. The incident was reported on Friday evening when parishioners saw a statue of Mary was broken and dragged. Another status of Jesus was found in broke pieces in the yard. Police reported this is not the first incident classified as hate crime. Police have the suspect in custody identified as Sung Lee, 26 of Bellerose. He has been charged with criminal mischief, contempt and other charges. Last year in December, a status was damaged and in October, glass sign was broken. Also in August, a suspect was arrested for throwing bricks through the front glass.
