Basement apartments legalization is heading to NYC Council hearing

On Tuesday, November 13, NYC Council will have the first hearing for basement legalization in NYC.

Already $12 million dollars has been allotted by the Mayor's office to develop a pilot program to start in East New York, Brooklyn where more than 100,000 residents are living in the basement illegally.

The city is working with building department to make it as part of the affordable housing.

Also, landlords will receive tax breaks when the basements are assigned by building dept to configure with up to date safety codes.

The pilot program will be assigned to a non-profit organization the city will select pending next week's hearing.

The plan includes Queens when ready.
