Zone change seeking for Queens while Nassau awaiting state approval all on casinos

Last summer, a member of the State Senate knocked off the approval for a casino next to the CitiField in Flushing due to beautiful green scenery being gone. Now the owner of Mets is moving forward for zone change as optimistic for the casino approval. The filing with the city that owns the parking lot disclosed new plans. The real truth was that the State Senate was backed by developers to change the zoning so some parts of the Flushing Meadows Corona Park to demap around 25 acres and roads to clear the project. If approved a new park would be created around the casino if approved.

As for Nassau Coliseum, the legislature voted 18-1 to give Las Vegas Sands a 42 year lease to operate a casino. The next step is state approval and it lies with the Governor.

So far there are 11 major players trying to grab the 3 licenses for downstate casinos which will be awarded next summer. For this, all must be ready with all zoning changes, local approvals, community support, environmental studies and the whole nine yards.

If Nassau Coliseum doesn’t get the license then it will move forth with a commercial center and a resort. As for Flushing, no alternative plans were not disclosed.
