Update on the eviction moratorium in NYC

The NY eviction moratorium expired last month and so far NYC housing court has not scheduled dates for pre pandemic cases.

This is due to backlogged with staff shortage according to courts. Now the elected officials are pushing for good cause eviction which means as long as tenants pay rent, they cannot be thrown out. This includes no rent raise unless a written agreement is in place. The lease protects tenants and most landlords doesn't do it. Now get this, over 60% living in affordable housing are in the process of being evicted for not paying the difference when their rent raised after the eviction mortarium. Now get this again, buildings under 3 families doesn't have to be registered with the Dept of Housing Preservation if the landlord resides there or has utility bills in their names but live elsewhere. The good cause eviction does not apply for buildings up to 3 families.

The affordable housing was actually a bait and switch. Most in the programs saw their rent rise and the elected officials looked the other way. Now some of them are promoting good cause eviction which is highly unlikely to pass in NYC since it's backed by another some of them elected officials to waive property taxes. This leaves families in the middle of a crisis. It is nice to see protestors fighting for evictions along with elected officials. The merry go round never stops. Now comes the best part, civil lawsuits are piling up and no free lawyers for that sector.
