Troopers investigate crash on I 81 in Cortlandville

On December 30, 2024, at approximately 7:58 a.m., New York State Police at Homer and other emergency responders were dispatched to Interstate 81 south near mile marker 49 in the town of Cortlandville for a two-vehicle crash with injuries.

An investigation at the scene revealed that a Toyota Camry was traveling south in the right lane on Interstate 81 when for an unknown reason, rear-ended a Honda CRV.  After striking the Honda, the Toyota then traveled into the center median.

Troopers were able to use a Division Issued tool called a “RESQME” window breaker to enter the vehicle and remove the operator who was breathing but unconscious from the Camry.  He is identified as a Kenneth G. Thompson, age 54 of McDonough, NY and was transported by TLC Ambulance to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.  Thompson was later interviewed by a Trooper at the hospital and is receiving further medical care.

The operator of the Honda CRV, Darrell W. Batchelor, age 43 of Grand Junction, CO and passenger Eddy H. Larson, age 60 of Grover, WY were both checked out by EMS on scene but were not transported to a hospital.

The investigation is on-going.
