State police make arrest in elderly scam investigation in Flushing

On December 3, 2024, State Police of Fonda arrested Zixiong Wang, 27, of Flushing, NY, for attempted Grand Larceny in the third degree and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the fifth degree.

On December 1, 2024, Troopers were contacted by an elderly Montgomery County resident reporting they believed they were the victim of an elaborate scam. The investigation determined the victim had been contacted via email in November 2024 advising they had purchased cryptocurrency.  The victim called the customer service number provided in the email.  During the phone conversations, the person the victim called manipulated the elderly person into believing they were a victim of fraud and that their online activity was being “watched.” The suspect demanded money from the victim on multiple occasions, resulting in the loss of more than $40,000.

On December 3, 2024, additional money had been demanded from the victim. Wang arrived at an agreed-upon location in Amsterdam, NY, and approached the victim in an attempt to take possession of the demanded money where State Police Investigators took him into custody. Upon being arrested, Wang was found to be in possession of cocaine.

The investigation is ongoing.
