Sidewalk charging stations to expand next month

The NYC Mayor's Office announced sidewalk charging services for e-bikes and other electronic bikes starting February 1, 2025.

The program is called, Charge Safe, Ride Safe to reduce lithium ion battery fires from stored inside.

All property owners including commercial and residential along with tenants can apply for the installation of battery cabinets.

The installation is adjacent to the buildings. As for residential, only for five or more units.

How it works is simple. Get a locker with keys and place the battery inside to be charged. Then remove and go ride around.

For now, this is connected to the city's underground electrical system and its paid by taxpayers.

Once people start using it heavily, the city will make money by charging people since it’s on the city’s property and not on the private side.

The application will be available for the public soon.
