Queens remembers an Ecuadorian legend

Today, Roosevelt Avenue and 64th Street was named after the late Marcelo Arboleda in Woodside.

The Bayside resident who arrived in America from Ecuador more than 30 years ago decided to do the American dream. He started the weekly newspaper, Ecuador News which is a must read that started 28 years ago when the first print issue was out. Since then, the newspaper is a carry on especially for those going to work on the packed 7 trains who would stretch pages to commuters looking at the Spanish words.

It is one of the largest publications most of the journalists look up to for guidance that showed resemblance of immigrants making a life in Queens without changing the originality of its roots. This means the publication was pure journalism without taking sides.

One of his contributor wrote on the memory,

"Dear reader, when you finish reading, remember that these pages were the creation of a great Ecuadorian, who was born and lived for journalism, Dr. Marcelo Arboleda Segovia."
