QR scanners increasing with scams

Before it was a credit card machine with a skimmer. Now comes QR scanners with fake stickers around NYC.

The NYC Dept of Consumers is warning people not to scan with a phone to a QR code unless it's authentic. Always check for duplicate stickers all around. This includes parking meters, menus or magazines. Often scammers create QR codes to trick people into visiting a fraudulent website or downloading malware that compromises their personal information.

If you are not sure of it, don't use the QR code.

Since this is a new scam increasing in NYC, the Mayor's Office is working on technology prevention and how law enforcement can track down the scammers.
