Planning Commission approves borough based jails in NYC

Today, The NYC Planning Commission voted 9 to 3 in favor of approval of borough based jails in Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx. Staten Island is not included. The next stage is approval from NYC Council. There will be a public hearing for the public on Thursday, September 5 at City Hall and its open for the public. If NYC Council members votes in favor, Mayor de Blasio is expected to pass it to have jails in four boroughs with a timetable to close Rikers island in 2026.
