NYS Attorney General reported no deposit required

NYS Attorney General Eric Schneiderman confirmed when hiring a contractor for services, a deposit is not mandatory. The office has setup a hotline for complaints on contractors for further investigation. In order for investigation, all services must be in writing. However, if the service is complete and not paid, a contractor is legally entitled to file a case for payment recovery and setup mechanic lien which is usually attached to a home for collections.
