NYC mayor created task force for illegal firework suppliers

Mayor de Blasio announced a new task force to crack down on illegal fireworks. This announcement came after group of people went to Gracie Mansion protesting to the mayor at night demanding action. Around 40 law enforcement officers will act as undercover buyers as part of the sting operation to target people coming from out of state with fireworks selling in NYC. Fireworks are legal to purchase in some parts of NJ and all of Pennsylvania. The mayor also stated a public safety campaign to educate the people of the dangers of fireworks toward the youths. Between June 8 and 15, there were 1,680 complaints on fireworks from 311 compared to 12 in 2019. The mayor stated the focus is on the bigger operations and not focused on the kids on the corner quoted, ?We?re focused on the people that are really profiting and really distributing a lot of fireworks.?
NYPD will not issue summons or arrest anyone for setting up illegal fireworks in NYC unless they are distributing by sale or suppliers.
