NYC has new law for 18 and under when arrested

Starting Monday, October 1, anyone 18 and under will not go to Rikers Island when arrested. Instead they will be released to parents after summons are issued at the local precinct for their next court appearance. Mayor di Blasio stated this is part of criminal justice reform and closing Rikers Island for community facilities. Of course, this does not includes homicide, robbery, burglary and sex crimes.

Update - The city has signed agreement with Bright Horizons to allow 18 and under for family solutions instead of Rikers Island. All arrested 18 and under will be oversee by correction officers assigned with ACS employees at the private facility.
