NYC files first lawsuit against AirBnB users

NYC has filed a new lawsuit against users of AirBnB for renting around 15 apartments in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. The users accused in the lawsuit made $1 million dollars from 5,000 people who rented the rooms. The locations are 12 John Street, 40 Water Street, 151 Stanton Street, 153 Stanton Street, 159 Bleecker Street, 238 Gates Avenue, 17-12 Menahan Street. The owners of those buildings used false identifications and the city tracked them down. This is the first lawsuit the city has filed. Unfortunately, the city is unable to stop AirBnB due to legal issues. One example is AirBnB is not responsible for their user participation. Each location of AirBnB has its own jurisdiction. This is what NYC Council Speaker stated to the media, ?Illegal hotel operators like the ones in this suit exacerbate the city?s housing affordability crisis. Shady profiteers like these that use our badly needed housing stock to turn a quick buck are shameful, and this is a perfect example of why we need to maintain enforcement efforts against this harmful behavior.?
