More hospitals are under investigation in NY after Attorney General settled with Brooklyn Hospital charging rape victims for kits

On Tuesday, November 28, NYS Attorney General announced settlement with Brooklyn Hospital after they charged rape victims for illegal billing for kits. All the patients were victims of rape, sexual assault and other sexual crimes. The hospital charged the victims and when they didn't pay, the payment due was forwarded to collection agencies. Under NY law, survivors are entitled to cost free emergency care but the hospital didn't follow. Now Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is investigating more hospitals after victims submitted complaints. About ten hospitals are involved and due to ongoing investigation, names of hospitals won't be disclosed. The victims are advised to contact NYS Office of Victim Services for additional complaints. The Brooklyn Hospital was under investigation when a victim forwarded complaint. Further investigation revealed from January 2015 to February 2017, 86 forensic rape victims were charged for kits and other services.
