Marijuana decriminalization goes into effect today in NYS

Starting today, marijuana decriminalization goes into effect across NYS. Anything less than 2 oz carrying is a violation by fine and not a crime. Public smoking is also a violation and not a crime. The penalty would be $50 for possessing less than one ounce or $200 for one to two ounces. Also, past convictions for low level marijuana offenses are wiped and criminal records are expunged. If people still has a record for such offense, file a paper with court to vacate past convictions. However, NYPD has harsh message that it is still illegal to posses any amount of marijuana.
