MTA bus drivers bypassing intersections to avoid assault in Bellerose

Commuters waiting for MTA bus on Union Turnpike by Winchester Blvd and Commonwealth Blvd in both directions often bypass due to homeless or mental patients sitting on the bench. Commuters often wonder why such incident is happening only to realize later other routes on Union Turnpike are used for pick-ups. Bus driver reported of assault and harassment when either homeless or mental patient once they get inside the bus while evading fares. Police were called also for such incidents. At the same time, bus drivers fearing for their safety often find it difficult to distinguish between homeless, mental and normal people based on the looks bypassing. People complained to MTA regardless and updated status are not available to the public. Most of the time, bypasses take place in the afternoon and not mainly rush hours.
