First hotel converted into affordable housing in Queens

NYCHA is an embarrassing name so let's call it better by each building with something new.

The long standing hotel, JFK Hilton Hotel near the airport is now ready with 100% affordable housing for homeless and low income families. This is the first building as a start to phase out the name, NYCHA which is also phasing out to private companies.

The new name for this building is Baisley Pond Park Residences which is a 318 unit that cost taxpayers a cheap $167 million.

The original plan was 50% for low income and the rest for the normal rental market. This is part of the $25 billion five-year Housing Plan which is on track to create or preserve 100,000 affordable homes statewide. The airport vicinity lands belong to the state.

All apartments are affordable to households earning up to 60 percent of the Area Median Income between $25,000 to $100,000. There are 191 supportive apartments reserved for eligible formerly homeless households.

As of this year, 18 locations of NYCHA have been transferred to private companies for management and less than half have most of the tenants removed due to non-payment.

The cycle repeats.
