Driver went into the school yard under DWI in Nassau County

The Fourth Squad reports the arrest of an East Rockaway man for an incident that occurred on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at 12:42 p.m. in East Rockaway. According to Detectives, the defendant Edward Coghlan, 73 was driving his 2004 Lincoln sedan when he struck a 2018 Subaru sedan in the parking lot of a Wendys located at 80 Ocean Avenue. The defendant continued to drive away southbound on Ocean Avenue and was followed by the operator of the Subaru. The defendant continued driving before crashing through a metal chain link fence at the Rhame Avenue Elementary School at 100 Rhame Avenue. After crashing through the fence, the staff members were able to safely get all the students back inside the school. The field was occupied by approximately 80 students and several staff members. The defendant continued driving across the field erratically and at a high rate of speed and fled the scene. Responding Fourth Precinct Officers were able to locate the defendant as he was driving on West Boulevard and placed him into custody without further incident. There were no injuries reported. Defendant Edward Coghlan is charged with DWI, two (2) counts of Criminal Mischief 4th Degree, Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. He will be arraigned on Thursday, June 3, 2021 in Mineola. (Pic and info from the Nassau County Police.)
