Driver in custody and a police officer lost a life along with others in Long Island update

The tragic event unfolded with more details in Long Island where a driver plowed into a nail salon in Deer Park resulting in four dead and scores of injured victims.

One of the dead was an NYPD officer off duty at the salon who was having her nails done.

The Suffolk County Police have arrested the driver identified as Steven Schwally, 64 of Dix Hills and charged with DWI after the crash. More charges are pending.

According to police, Schwally was driving a Chevy Traverse exiting from the parking lot of Kohl on Grand Blvd around 5pm. A witness told police the same vehicle was swerving before it crashed toward the nail salon, Hawaii Nail and Spa. The vehicle went all the way inside the salon. Police personnel reported people were trapped inside the salon and were rescued. 

Four people died. Three women and a man. One of the women was an off duty cop with the NYPD. Nine people were taken to local hospitals with injuries.

Schwally is also taken to a local hospital with injuries and his arraignment is pending.

The investigation continues.
