Arrests made across NYC stores in welfare fraud schemes

Homeland Security Investigation agents and NYPD arrested more than 30 people mostly of Asian nationals from local grocery stores for illegally cashing vouchers taken from food stamps holders. All are facing federal criminal charges since its part of WIC which is Woman, Infant and Children (WIC) benefits and split the money without buying food. Authorities became suspicious when a local store on Broadway in Elmhurst was processing more than 25,000 coupons a month when the national average is 200 per month.
