Arrest made following shots fired at monticello apartment complex

On Thursday, April 10, 2025, at approximately 3:05 p.m., New York State Police in Sullivan County responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired at the Evergreen Apartment Complex located on Evergreen Drive in the Village of Monticello.

The preliminary investigation revealed that an employee at the Dollar General located at 18 Forestburgh Rd, Monticello, NY, initially contacted the Village of Monticello Police Department regarding an individual shoplifting at the store.  Monticello Police then dispatched for the shoplifting call.  Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputies who were monitoring the radio traffic responded to the area of the Dollar General and the Evergreen Apartment Complex where they encountered an individual that fit the general description of the shoplifting suspect.  As the Deputies approached, the subject began to remove articles of clothing and fled on foot, prompting a brief foot pursuit.

During the foot pursuit, the suspect identified as Markell D. Jarrette, age 29, of Monticello, produced a firearm and discharged it in the direction a Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputy.  One deputy returned fire, striking the suspect.  The suspect continued to flee a short distance before surrendering. He was taken into custody by a New York State Trooper and the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputies.  A firearm was recovered at the scene.

Markell D. Jarrette was provided medical aid on scene and then transported to Garnet Health Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill.  He was treated and released.   Jarrette was arrested and charged with Attempted Murder in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.

 The investigation remains ongoing
