Arbitrator set deadline for NYC to pay teachers back wages

On Friday, arbitrator announced half of $900 million owed in back wages to NYC teachers must be paid by October 31. This came after the mayor stated the city doesn't have the money to pay back. By July 2021, the second half must be paid. However, due to long weekend, the mayor's office has not responded whether there will be appeal or change. UFT chief Mulgrew reminded the mayor's office of the payment due in October. The mayor's office responded with, "The city is currently unable to make a lump sum payment to active and retired UFT employees as had been scheduled for this month pursuant to the May 1, 2014 Memorandum of Agreement."

NYC just paid $106 million to school bus companies for two idle months during the Covid shutdown. Now, the city says it's too broke to pay teachers back wages owed for years.

This is the statement from UFT Mulgrew, "This is far from a perfect solution for thousands of members who are still owed deferred wages that can go back as far as ten years. The decision recognizes the city's difficult financial circumstances because of the coronavirus pandemic, but makes it clear that the city must find a way to meet its financial obligations to its educators,"
