Apna Bazaar pleaded guilty for not paying fair wages to 150 employees

On Wednesday, September 20, NYS Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced a press statement with guilty pleas and convictions of Apna Bazaar, located in Floral Park, 260-04 Hillside Avenue and Hicksville, 217 Bethpage Road for not paying fair wages to 150 workers. Several workers complained to the attorney general's office of not being paid and investigation started in 2012. By 2015, 150 workers were not paid minimum wage for working 40 hours week. Some worked overtime and weren't paid. During the investigation, authorities reported management of Apna Bazaar falsified documents with NYS Dept of Labor of wages, withholding and insurance filing. Today, the company as part of the plea agreed to pay $447,832.11 for unpaid wages and $162,445.47 in unpaid unemployment dues to Dept of Labor. Also, the company's sub-division acting as Apna Bazaar, S&L Vegetables Corp and J&B Vegetables Corp which filed with Dept of Labor must report for one year in cooperation with workers and three years probation. At the same time Apna Bazaar agreed to cooperate with an independent monitoring company with presence in both stores overseeing worker conditions. If violated, both business will be shut down.
