ADU pilot program approved for one part of Queens

It failed in Brooklyn so let's try in Queens.

The NYC Mayor's Office confirmed the basement legalization pilot program has been approved for Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside and Community Board 2 vicinity under the Governor's budget.

This program was launched by then Mayor de Blasio which started with one and two family homes in East New York. Of 800 applied, only 5 moved forward and then only 3 were in agreement. Of the last 3, two more dropped leaving to a lone homeowner. This is due to expenses running up tabs to keep the basement up to the building depatment's code which can exceed over $25,000 and more.

The Governor quoted,

“What we have to do is also be sensitive to what communities want. Some neighborhoods really want this, some do not. We don’t want Albany to always be dictating what’s going to happen at the street level. So you will see a compromise that allows for it to happen on a pilot basis.”

For Queens, it's a wait and watch.
